Affect and Effect

What factor affect the success of social networking site?
  1. The internet connectivity - the current speed of internet connection is far ways better than before. So, people can access the sites easily
  2. Technologies - with the development of the technologies, people can access their social networking account on the computer, mobile phone or even another mobile device like PSP and iPad.
  3. Basic human need to connect - For most of history, connections were largely limited by geographical or economic considerations. Social networks allow people to expand their connections around interests.
  4. Basic human need to share - Social networks appeal to the altruistic side of people by allowing them to share their connections, information, opinions and also introduce friends to other friends
  5. Enhance knowledge - people will use social networking site to learn and enhance their knowledge
  6. Online identity - people are excited to have an online identity to trying to be someone else or someone different and it leads to successfulness of social networking site.
  7. Viral nature - people who had joined online social networking site tends to invite his friend to join along. And the friend of him also will invite another friends. This continuity really helps the social networking site to grow.
What is the effect of social networking?
  1. Universal identities -- People today tend to have multiple profile on different social networking site and the need to maintain that accounts. For example, a user has profiles on social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn. He also has profiles on social media services like del.icio.us, Twitter, and Digg. There are accounts on Google, Yahoo, Windows Live, and AOL, and shopping profiles and feedback on Amazon and eBay. And then there are the identities he has with his work, my club, and his kids’ school. After all, he need to be able to maintain and control his identity, and when needed, to make them connected between services.
  2. Social platform wars -- developer of this social networking site will fight with each other to get the best rating among society. They will have to compete on the basis of creating the best experience for its members. MySpace and Facebook finally find a way to solve this issue. You can read the article about their mash-up by clicking here. This is the illustration of the situation.
  3. The advertising companies / product marketing also have been influence by this trend as seen in this video.
  4. Its also have influence on film industry - as seen as latest movie or drama, they will use social networking site as a joke or a way to interact. Eg. Nyankung (Malay movie) - a bomoh take a picture of his patient and mention that he want to upload it on Facebook, Sunao ni narakute (Japanese drama) - a series about a group of people who know each other through Tweeter and start to become closed friends, and many more.
  5. Change the way of spreading information - user just need to post what he want to say on his profile and waiting for others to respond. He do not need to spam his message on everyone email anymore.
  6. Event invitation / meeting conformation - the organizer just need to put the details on the event page and invite certain people to join. No need to spread single message anumore.
  7. Its become a part of life - before social networking site become popular, people will asked others phone number to stay in touch. But nowadays, they tend to ask the person's social networking site link before go for phone number.
  8. Addictiveness - the games and application on social networking sites tend to make the user addictive and it will affect their study/work performance.

Facebook apps

There are two set of Facebook apps -- first-party apps and third-party apps. Let's take a look at each of these in turns.

First-party application
These applications are developed by Facebook and available to all members. It include photos, videos, groups, events, marketplace, posted items, notes and gifts. Here's a quick breakdown on what each application does:
  • The photos application allows you to upload as many images as you like. If you have a picture of another Facebook member, you can tag the photo with that member's name. After tagging the photo, it'll appear both in your photo album and on your friend's profile.
  • Facebook's video application is similar in many ways to YouTube. Members can upload videos in almost every format, but Facebook requests that all files remain below 100 megabytes and that videos be shorter than two minutes. Facebook converts videos into the flash (.flv) format.
  • With the groups application, you can join other members' interest groups or you can create one of your own.
  • The events application allows you to invite other Facebook members to a real-life gathering.
  • Facebook's marketplace is a lot like craigslist -- it lets members connect with other people who want to buy or sell stuff. All transactions occur directly between members -- Facebook only hosts the exchange; it doesn't get involved in sales.
  • The posted items application can be used to post videos, songs or anything else on a Web page to your profile. All you have to do is enter the Web page's URL into the post field on Facebook. The application generates a thumbnail of the target page that acts as a hyperlink. Your friends can click on the thumbnail to visit Web sites that you think are cool and interesting.
  • With the gifts application, you can send another member a virtual gift in the form of a small icon. There are dozens of gifts to choose from, all designed by Susan Kare, who created the icons for the original Macintosh computer system. The first gift is free, but all subsequent gifts cost $1 and require a credit card -- Facebook doesn't accept PayPal. Facebook donates proceeds from gift giving to charitable organizations. Gifts can be private or public, and you can include a message with your gift.
Third-party application
Third-party Facebook applications can dramatically change your experience on the site, including a massive overhaul to your profile page. Your simple profile can transform into an exciting page that includes videos, product reviews, games and virtual pets. These applications is developed by facebook members themselves which is hundreds of it available on the site.
  • To create applications in Facebook, you first must add the Facebook developer application to your profile.
  • You also must have access to a Web server where you can store your application -- Facebook does not host third-party programs.
  • Applications can be Web-based, desktop-based or mobile-device-based.
  • Facebook's application programming interface (API) is based on a Representational State Transfer (REST) interface.
  • REST network was an idealized version of the World Wide Web that had independent components that worked together to maximize the efficiency of data transfers
  • a REST-interface means that applications interfacing with Facebook send method calls using Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) -- GET or POST requests. HTTP is the communications protocol used by the World Wide Web -- the GET request retrieves information and the POST request adds information to an existing Web page. This means that Facebook applications can retrieve information from member profiles, post messages to profiles or do both.
  • Developers can also use the Facebook Query Language (FQL), which is similar to Structured Query Language (SQL). These programming languages designed to retrieve information from databases. With FQL, a developer can obtain information about any user who downloads his or her application.
  • For those developers who want to create applications that deeply integrate themselves into Facebook's platform, there's the Facebook Markup Language (FBML). Facebook derived the language from HTML and added some site-specific tags. Using this language, developers can create applications that become a more integral part of the user's Facebook experience, affecting profile appearance and function.
  • Every application has a space on Facebook called a canvas page, which developers can use however they wish. When a user clicks on an application icon, his or her web browser goes to that application's canvas page. Developers can include Web advertising on canvas pages, sell products using a Facebook-designed interface or simply share information with the user.
I think, using Facebook apps is quite interesting for my project execution. I'll develop more idea on this apps for this project.

How Facebook works?

After i reviewed the ranking of most visited social networking site for last week and last month, I learnt that Facebook is really dominant to today's lifestyle. So, i've decided to do a deep research on Facebook.

The history
In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, three Harvard University students, launched a Web site designed to put students in touch with one another, share their photos and meet new people. They called it thefacebook.com, and before long the site became extremely popular on the Harvard campus. A month after the site launched, the creators expanded it to include students from Stanford, Columbia and Yale. By 2005, students in 800 college networks across the United States could join the network, and its membership grew to more than 5 million active users. In August of that year, the site's name changed to Facebook. It was originally intended for college students, but today anyone can join the network. Although the site's scope has expanded to include more than just students, its purpose remains the same -- giving people a way to share information in an easy and entertaining way.

How to start?
  • you must create a free account on the site.
  • Facebook's terms of use state that members must be at least 13 years old, and any member between the ages of 13 and 18 must be enrolled in school.
  • It requires new members to provide a valid e-mail address before completing registration.
  • Once you've created an account and answered a few questions about where you work, where you went to school and where you live, Facebook will generate a profile for you.
How to find friends on Facebook?
  • You can browse and join networks. Once you join a network, you can browse through the list of members and search for people you know.
  • You can let Facebook pull contacts from a Web-based e-mail account. To do this, you have to give Facebook your e-mail address and password. Whenever Facebook discovers a match, it gives you the option to add that person as a friend.
  • You can use Facebook's search engine to look for a specific person. Type the person's name into the search field, and Facebook will display any profiles that match the name
What is Facebook profile?

The interface of my Facebook profile

Facebook profile is the Web page that other members will see if they look you up. It gives people an idea about who you are and what your interests include. Facebook assumes that many of the people with whom you'll want to connect work for the same company, went to the same school or live in the same town as you. To make it easier to find friends both old and new, Facebook gathers information about you and everyone else to create a dense network of contacts but u can always adjust privacy settings so that others can't find you.

In a profile, there will be these features:
  • A space where you can upload a profile picture.
  • A friends section, which displays pictures of Facebook members you've befriended.
  • A section that shows the personal information you've decided to share with other members. This can include your birthday, work history, education and interests.
  • A mini-feed section, which informs visitors about what you've been up to. If you change your profile picture or add a friend, the mini-feed will display a message about it.
  • A comments section called the wall, where other members can leave messages for you.
You can customize your Facebook profile using Facebook applications which were developed by other members.

What is Facebook homepage?
The basic homepage layout includes a news feed that keeps you updated about what your friends and networks are up to. There's also a status update section, which contains notices about messages you've received, invitations to events, notices about applications your friends would like you to try and a place where you can tell people how you're feeling or what you're up to. There's also a link that lets you invite friends to join Facebook.

What is Facebook applications?
Facebook's applications set it apart from other social networking sites.
  • Facebook's first-party applications include photos, videos, groups, events, marketplace, posted items, notes and gifts. These are applications developed by Facebook and available to all members.
  • Facebook's third-party applications --there are hundreds of them developed by Facebook members.
I'll explain details about these applications in my next post.

Facebook Mobile
You can access Facebook features using a mobile device in three ways: mobile text messages, mobile uploads and mobile Web browsing.
  • Mobile text messages -- When you send a text message from your phone to Facebook, the message transmits to a mobile switching center (MSC), which sends the signal to a signal transfer point (STP). From there, the message goes to a short message service center (SMSC), which then sends the text to Facebook. When Facebook sends a message to your phone, the process is reversed
  • Mobile uploads -- work in a similar way to text messages, but must use MMS. MMS allows you to send not only text, but also sound files, video and images. The transfer method is similar to SMS, but it requires a handheld device compatible with the MMS standard.
  • Mobile web browsing -- Your phone must have Web browsing capabilities in order for you to visit Facebook from it. You'll need to direct your phone's browser to m.facebook.com, Facebook's site designed specifically for mobile browsing.Unlike typical Facebook pages, the mobile counterpart's code is in Extensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML). XHTML is a more restricted language than standard HTML.

The History

First recognizable social network site launched in 1997, SixDegrees.com allowed users to create profiles, list their Friends and, beginning in 1998, surf the Friends lists. Each of these features existed in some form before SixDegrees. Profiles existed on most major dating sites and many community sites. Classmates.com which is launched in 1995 allowed people to affiliate with their high school or college mate and surf the network for others who were also affiliated, but users could not create profiles or list friends until years later. SixDegrees was the first to combine these features.

SixDegrees promoted itself as a tool to help people connect with and send messages to others. While SixDegrees attracted millions of users, it failed to become a sustainable business and, in 2000, the service closed. Looking back, its founder believes that SixDegrees was simply ahead of its time. He thinks while people were already flocking to the Internet, most did not have extended networks of friends who were online. Early adopters complained that there was little to do after accepting Friend requests, and most users at that time were not interested in meeting strangers.

From 1997 to 2001, a number of community tools began supporting various combinations of profiles and publicly articulated friends. The site like AsianAvenue, BlackPlanet, and MiGente allowed users to create personal, professional, and dating profiles where users could identify friends on their personal profiles without seeking approval for those connections. Likewise, shortly after its launch in 1999, LiveJournal listed one-directional connections on user pages. LiveJournal's creator suspects that he fashioned these friends after instant messaging buddy lists. On LiveJournal, people mark others as Friends to follow their journals and manage privacy settings. The Korean virtual worlds site Cyworld was started in 1999 and added social networking site features in 2001, independent of these other sites. Likewise, when the Swedish web community LunarStorm refashioned itself as an social networking site in 2000, it contained friends lists, guestbooks, and diary pages.

The next wave of social networking sites began when Ryze.com was launched in 2001 to help people leverage their business networks. Ryze's founder reports that he first introduced the site to his friends—primarily members of the San Francisco business and technology community, including the entrepreneurs and investors behind many future social networking sites. In particular, the people behind Ryze, Tribe.net, LinkedIn, and Friendster were tightly entwined personally and professionally. They believed that they could support each other without competing. In the end, Ryze never acquired mass popularity, Tribe.net grew to attract a passionate niche user base, LinkedIn became a powerful business service, and Friendster became the most significant in that era. As the social media and user-generated content phenomena grew, websites focused on media sharing began implementing SNS features and becoming SNSs themselves. Examples include Flickr (photo sharing), Last.FM (music listening habits), and YouTube (video sharing).

Timeline of the launch dates of many major SNSs and dates when community sites re-launched with SNS features

They are some social networking sites that successfully create a phenomenon. Three of them are Friendster, Myspace and Facebook.

Friendster -- launched in 2002 as a social complement to Ryze. It was designed to compete with Match.com, a profitable online dating site. While most dating sites focused on introducing people to strangers with similar interests, Friendster was designed to help friends-of-friends meet, based on the assumption that friends-of-friends would make better romantic partners than would strangers. As Friendster's popularity surged, the site encountered technical and social difficulties. Because organic growth had been critical to creating a coherent community, the onslaught of new users who learned about the site from media coverage upset the cultural balance. Users had to face their bosses and former classmates alongside their close friends. To complicate matters, Friendster began restricting the activities of its most passionate users. The initial design of Friendster restricted users from viewing profiles of people who were more than four degrees away (friends-of-friends-of-friends-of-friends). In order to view additional profiles, users began adding acquaintances and interesting-looking strangers to expand their reach and began massively collecting friends. This features helps Fakester (people who create fake profile on Friendster) to mushroom and make other people loose interest of this site. However, at the same time that it was fading in the U.S., its popularity skyrocketed in the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

MySpace -- begun in 2003 to compete with sites like Friendster, Xanga, and AsianAvenue. According to co-founder Tom Anderson ; the founders wanted to attract estranged Friendster users. After rumors emerged that Friendster would adopt a fee-based system, users posted Friendster messages encouraging people to join alternate social networking sites, including Tribe.net and MySpace. Because of this, MySpace was able to grow rapidly by capitalizing on Friendster's alienation of its early adopters. One particularly notable group that encouraged others to switch were indie-rock bands who were expelled from Friendster for failing to comply with profile regulations. Bands were not the sole source of MySpace growth, but the symbiotic relationship between bands and fans helped MySpace expand beyond former Friendster users. Futhermore, MySpace differentiated itself by regularly adding features based on user demand and allowing users to personalize their pages. Teenagers began joining MySpace in 2004. Unlike older users, most teens were never on Friendster joined because they wanted to connect with their favorite bands or were introduced to the site through older family members. Then, in July 2005, News Corporation purchased MySpace for $580 million attracting massive media attention. Afterwards, safety issues plagued MySpace. The site was implicated in a series of sexual interactions between adults and minors, prompting legal action. A moral panic concerning sexual predators quickly spread although research suggests that the concerns were exaggerated.

Facebook -- began in early 2004 as a Harvard-only social networking site. To join, a user had to have a harvard.edu email address. As Facebook began supporting other schools, those users were also required to have university email addresses associated with those institutions, a requirement that kept the site relatively closed and contributed to users' perceptions of the site as an intimate, private community. Beginning in September 2005, Facebook expanded to include high school students, professionals inside corporate networks, and, eventually, everyone. The change to open signup did not mean that new users could easily access users in closed networks because gaining access to corporate networks still required the appropriate .com address, while gaining access to high school networks required administrator approval. The difference feature of Facebook is the ability for outside developers to build "Applications" which allow users to personalize their profiles and perform other tasks, such as compare movie preferences and chart travel histories.

Social Networking Site!

What is it?
Social networking could be described as a group of individuals that have same interest or activities (workplaces, hometown, hobbies, etc) and they are likely to meet each other to gather and share their information and also experiences about their interest. Whilst online social networking service is a platform for them to gather and share their information and experiences virtually using the internet service. Websites, known as social sites are commonly used as these online social networking services. It is functioned as online community of internet users. They can develop friendship or professional alliances, finding employment, and even group sharing information by using this service. Once user starts creating a profile or account in this service, they can begin to socialize. This socialization may include observing of other’s profile or possibly contacting them with information provided.

How does it works?
  1. Before starting, you need to have an account on the social networking site.
  2. To create a profile (account), u will be asked to choose login name and password.
  3. When u have your login name, u will be asked for your personal information like name, age, sex, location, relationship status and any hobby or special interest.
  4. You can choose to personalize your profile with photo, video and music later (remember that this will presenting who are u in online world)
  5. When u are done, u can start looking for friend and make connections either with existing user or u invite your friends by email.

  1. most basic feature is the ability to create and share a personal profile like photo, some basic personal information (name, age, sex, location) and extra space for listing favorite bands, books, TV shows, movies, hobbies and Web sites.
  2. most important feature of online social networks is the ability to find and make friends with other site members.
  3. there are different rules and methods for searching out and contacting potential friends depending on the social networking site. For example,
  • MySpace - you're allowed to search for and contact people across the entire network, whether they're distant members of your social network or complete strangers.

Hacking into social networks requires very little technical skill and it's much more of a psychological game which is to using information on personal profiles to win a complete stranger's trust. So, the more personal and professional information you include on your public profile, the easier it is for a hacker to exploit that information to gain your trust.

Background Study

My topic is camwhoring and how it is related to social networking. So, I have decided to focus on camwhoring as the content and social networking as the concept.

What is camwhoring all about?
  • Camwhoring is someone who have high self obsession and likes taking pictures of themselves in any places or circumstances but without showing any unnecessary part of their body.
  • They usually like to seek for attentions and will use online social networking services such as Facebook, MySpace and Friendster as their medium.
Why I choose this topic?
  • Adapted from Japanese pop culture. The adaption is the effect of "Look East Policy" which is launched in 1982. In that policy, our 4th Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad suggest Malaysian to follow the work ethic of Japanese and Korean. By that, we also adapting the technologies and the hi-tech lifestyle/cultural in our community.
  • Japan is also known as the land of camera. They are really loved to take pictures of themselves either captured by someone else or by their own. But taking pictures of own self which is also known as camwhoring is started to be a trend. These scenarios can be seen through their drama, movies and also anime.
  • They usually take pictures using their camera mobile phone. After taking the pictures, they will share it via their mobile email. But now, in cyber community era and the technologies growth on internet, the focused will be on the online social network services.
  • The habit of taking own pictures has been mushroomed to all over the world including Malaysia.
  • Capturing and uploading own images have become a core subject in online networking world.
  • They will capture their images in every place they visited and also on every circumstance that they had been through to update their online friends on what they are doing now or where they are.
  • This phenomenon is proven when one of the Malaysian celebrities became a host to an award giving events and the show was aired live on television at the beginning of 2010. During the show, while waiting for the performers to get ready, he took out his phone and captured the image of himself with the audiences as the background. He then announced that he already uploaded the image on his online social networking account and the fans can checked for it there.
  • This trend also can be seen in Malaysian drama and movies.
The concept of Social Networking site
  • bring user close to each other virtually
  • people can share information easily on net
  • a collaborative technologies for individuals to interact with one another through the web.
  • "Social networking is not new; we just have new ways to do it" - Google's Joe Kraus
  • "In social web, your users will simply expect to be part of the conversation" - Google's Joe Kraus

They have high self obsession but they did not showing their flesh/skin or something unnecessary in this context. Other than that, people who enjoying camwhoring usually like to seek for attentions and will use online social networking services such as Facebook, MySpace and Friendster as their medium.

.:: Site Visit! ::.

Last Saturday (6 Nov 2010), my nieces and I went to Petrosains KLCC. This is our first time being there and it was a bit unlucky for us. We are coming from home at Bukit Antarabangsa on 11 am and reached KLCC barely on almost 12. We then headed to Petrosains and trying to get the ticket of 12.30pm admission or 1pm. Unfortunately, the only ticket left is on 4pm or later due to a lot of school visit groups (I totally forgot that UPSR is just ended. So, the student will definitely spend their time left in primary school to do school visit). I then asked the volunteer there about the estimated time to experience all the installation inside. He guaranteed us that two hours is enough and we decided to buy the ticket of 4pm’s admission (Petrosains operates till 6.30pm on weekend).

My ticket

When it’s almost 4pm, we come back to Petrosains but some technical problems occur. Our admission has been postponed to 4.20pm. While waiting for the admission, we hang around at the lobby. There are a lot that can be explored at the lobby - multitouch table showing maps and pictures, informative touch screen application and video messages recording.

We then queue up to start our journey in dark ride. When we reach platform after dark ride, we noticed that some installation are closed on 5pm. But then we continue our trip with some available application. These are the list of the application that I managed to experience and found it interesting.

  1. 3D Projection - a 3d image of car has been projected on a surface. User need to try to grab that car.
  2. SPACE video conference – 2 user s being at difference stations and they can connect to each other by using video conference.
  3. 3Earthquake simulator – User need to sit on a bench and press a button. The bench then start to simulate the earthquake on 3 levels.
  4. Helicopter simulator – user will experience the situation on helicopter to go to oil platform

I really enjoy my short trip that day. I have learnt a lot about science and also observing how people react on certain installation. I found that the installation with camera have more attraction then others. Maybe I should come again later to experience all the installation there.
